Mariemont is s a quaint little village, where neighbors know one another's names and people are always walking and jogging around the square. With its simple storefronts and pleasant surroundings, it's a hard place not to like.
The National Exemplar is a great place to discover how small town charm and good cuisine can exist in the same place.
Located in a hotel fashioned after an old English Tudor, the National Exemplar is fancy only in the sense of how understated it is. The home-like interior underwent a major renovation several months ago, gaining new window treatments, carpet, artwork, tables, chandeliers, lighting and shelves. (Southerby's, the pub in the front of the hotel, is equally impressive and cozy.)
The food, however, is what makes the restaurant truly exemplary. With appetizers such as nachos ($4-$8), lighter fare like crab cake po-boys ($11) and mushroom and spinach quesadillas ($9) as well as entrées including prime rib ($24) and grilled ahi tuna ($24), National Exemplar offers plenty of good food.
Menu Sampler:
Appetizer: Cajun barbecue shrimp and grits with spicy barbecue sauce, bacon and cheese grits and tasso ham gravy ($9) or nachos ($4 half order, $8 full)
Entree: Steak KP center-cut filet, butterflied with jumbo shrimp, lump crabmeat, homemade béarnaise sauce, baked potato and a seasonal vegetable ($31)
Dessert: Mini Key lime pie ($2), baby brûlée ($2) or "the world's smallest sundae" ($2)
