The Cock & Bull has carved out its spot among the bars and restaurants of Covington's MainStrasse Village, where it has been a fixture on the corner of Sixth and Main since 1999. The operators of the English-style pub saw an opportunity to duplicate the success in the Glendale's Village Square neighborhood.

The Glendale version opened in November 2008.

The two-story establishment, located in the former location of the Glendale Pub, has a full-service bar and a dining room on each floor, plus additional tables on a patio.

On a recent weekday visit, a friend and I were two of the first people through the door for an early lunch, but by the time we were settling the bill, the first-floor dining room was packed.

Though the impressive beer list is a major draw of its own, food seemed to be what lured the lunchtime crowd.

The Glendale Cock & Bull is a bit more meat-based than the Covington location. It offers a pork chop bone-in dinner ($17.99) and steaks and strips such as a 12-ounce Bull's Rib-eye ($20.99) and the Cock & Bull Steak (a 14-ounce New York strip; $24.99). Each comes with a salad, a side and a roll.

But fish remains the specialty. It's probably against some sort of rule to report about an English pub without trying the fish and chips ($8.99). But there's already a quote from the Enquirer on the menu ("Piping hot, flavorful, and practically greaseless! Top Five in the area.") so why double up?

My friend flipped a page to the burgers and chose the 3B Style Bull Burger ($9.79), a half-pounder broiled, then sautéed, in balsamic vinegar and topped with crumbled blue cheese and bacon. It was served with a pickle, and he chose french fries over the pub chips. We each has a glass of iced tea ($1.99).

The Buffalo chicken wrap ($7.99) I ordered proved as filling as my friend reported his burger to be.

There's a lot more on the menu, and when I don't have to keep the bill under $25, I'll get that New York strip and a 9-percent beer.
