Southern cities often have a legacy of small and family-owned businesses. Continuing the trend here, Flo's Plate Full of Soul has vibrant and familiar faces of friendly chefs offering Southern hospitality and some of the best wings, whiting and peach cobbler right in the heart of the city.

THE MOOD

With a continuous hustle during lunch hours, Flo's took me right back to my grandmother's kitchen or the Sunday dinner lines after church services when I was young. The only downfall to Flo's is orders must be placed to go; there are no tables or chairs. The sweet aroma of all your soulful favorites is alluring from way beyond Court Street.

THE FOOD

Flo's offers hefty portions for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I stopped by the small street cafe for lunch and ordered a catfish dinner with two sides - macaroni and cheese and fried cabbage ($8.99) and a slice of 7-UP cake for dessert ($1.50). My cousin had two chicken wing orders ($3.50 each). I'm not the kind of guy who's modest when it comes to soul food, so before I left, I decided to add on an extra piece of catfish ($2).

I am a sucker for great catfish, so I knew that would be the first thing I'd try - and I was not disappointed. Originally I wanted collard greens and Flo's famous peach cobbler, but they were an hour's wait, so I settled for the next best thing. If you want to go the semi-healthy route with dessert, choices such as vanilla cream cake and a variety of cobblers can be made sugar-free upon request.

My cousin was skeptical about the wings, which are made without flour, but she enjoyed them. They were crispier than normal since the lack of flour changed the texture.

The only thing we added to make our meal complete was, of course, the hot sauce!

THE DRINKS

I chose bottled water ($1), but there's plenty of assorted canned sodas. My cousin didn't order a drink.

THE DAMAGE: $20.49

The extra catfish was our downfall. But, the more catfish, the merrier I will be after my mandatory nap.
