New burgers near UC

Five Guys Burgers and Fries recently opened in University Heights. This franchise, which started in Arlington, Va., in 1986, has been expanding across the country for the last three years.

The menu is simple: burgers, hot dogs and fries. But there are lots of toppings for customizing your own: grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, green peppers, jalapenos and A-1 sauce, along with the standard ketchup, mustard, mayo, tomato, lettuce and onion.

The local developer hopes to open 20 more locations in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky. The next will be in Crestview Hills. The store at 210 Calhoun St. is open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

Music, art and sandwiches

Cold Turkey, 130 E.. Sixth St., downtown, had its grand opening in late June. It's owned by Mike Perrich and Jameson Stewart, both in their mid-20s. They have works of art from local artists on the walls, and they hire local musicians to play live during lunch.

There are sandwiches and salads on the menu, along with some interesting side dishes, such as ants on a log (celery, peanut butter, raisins). On the sandwich menu are chicken salad and tuna salad, as well as the Gobbler, which is a turkey sandwich served Philly style with Cheez Whiz, roasted red peppers, banana peppers and onions; and the Death of Elvis, with peanut butter, seared banana, and honey on cinnamon swirl, among many others.

It's open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday for lunch and 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Friday and Saturday for late-night. Call 513-651-0011 for more info.
