Marsha Ambrosius, 'Late Nights and Early Mornings'
As one-half of the duo Floetry, Marsha Ambrosius proved that British singers could do sexy neo-soul as well as their American counterparts. After a few false starts, she’s finally dropping her debut solo album on J Records, home to Alicia Keys (who co-wrote a track on this set, “With You”) and Jamie Foxx. It’s a slick, competent effort, but hardly worth the wait—Ambrosius is in fine vocal form throughout, but she sounds a bit off her game in terms of songwriting, striving too hard for a contemporary edge at the expense of the timeless, jazzy touches that made Floetry’s material so distinctive. Case in point: “Hope She Cheats on You (With a Basketball Player),” which is just as corny and heavy-handed as it sounds.
