Daniel Martin Moore, 'In the Cool of the Day'
It says a good bit when your official press release is written by none other than My Morning Jacket lead singer Jim James. The frequent collaborators and friends teamed up for last year's "Dear Companion," along with Ben Sollee—a folksy record intended to draw attention to the problem of mountaintop removal (MTR), a destructive coal mining practice. Moore, whose debut was released by Sub Pop after he sent in a demo (just the way it's never supposed to actually work!), moves in a slightly different direction with "In the Cool of the Day." The record features renderings of gospel favorites from his childhood, as well as a few originals sprinkled in, maximizing his earnestly sweet voice. Alongside banjo picks and violins, the songs sway in a way that evokes Americana rarely visited in indie rock.
