At South by Southwest's first evening of official showcases, most of the buzz centered around the NPR showcase at Stubb's, headlined by the Decemberists. Earlier that evening, New Zealand up-and-comer Ladyhawke entertained the Stubb's crowd with a frothy set of throwback synth-rock. Over at the Central Presbyterian Church, the 4AD showcase had fans lining up down the block to catch a glimpse of two of that label's hottest acts, Texas native and guitar shredder Annie Clark, a.k.a. St. Vincent, and Brooklyn folk-rock duo Department of Eagles. Our roving photographer also caught NYC rockers Deer Tick and Harlem Shakes, and Jack White's least favorite band, Detroit's Von Bondies.
