As an artist handpicked for success by Jay-Z for the Def Jam label, Rihanna is living the American music dream. But, with the release of her third album in three years, no one can say the gorgeous 19-year-old Bajan singer isn't a hard worker.
From the title, "Good Girl Gone Bad" sounds like it could be a departure for this sweet singer, yet Rihanna brings more of the same ballads and uptempo cuts that have already made her a success.
Lead single "Umbrella," featuring Jay-Z, is a perfect pop creation—what starts off as annoying gradually becomes insidiously catchy. The album's only other collaboration, with singer Ne-Yo on the guitar-led "Hate That I Love You," seems equally poised for urban radio domination.
Despite the singer's success with last year's worldwide smash "S.O.S."—which proclaimed overheated love over a cleverly twisted sample of Soft Cell's Eighties hit "Tainted Love"—"Good Girl Gone Bad" generally avoids obvious samples. The one delicious exception is "Don't Stop the Music," a dance track peppered with the famous handclaps and catchy "mama say, mama sa, mama coo sa" chanting in Michael Jackson's "P.Y.T."
Rihanna doesn't necessarily need such novelties. But it doesn't hurt when this eye candy ups the ear candy a bit, either.
