Artist: Sarah Jaffe
Album: Suburban Nature
Daniele says: Jaffe is a Denton, Texas, native with a beautiful voice and sweet, soft melodies with lyrics that have deeper meanings than, oh, say, Katy Perry's. The album was released in May, and I can't get enough of this track. She has toured with Lou Barlow, Norah Jones and Midlake (yes!). I have a feeling she is going to sound just as great live, at MOTR Pub on Dec. 9. Song: "Heaven on Their Minds"
Daniele says: Foxy Shazam, and its wacky lead singer, Eric Nally, never ceases to amaze me. This is a cover song from "Jesus Christ Superstar," and it's featured on a holiday album, of course. It's Foxy Shazam. They have reasons for everything they do, and each reason is always technically spelled out, if rather prolifically, by Nally himself. Here is his brilliant explanation of why the band chose this song for a holiday album:
"Before you hear this I would like to explain. On first listen you might think to yourself... 'this is not a Christmas song, what were they thinking? Where's Frosty the Snowman or Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer?' Well, let me tell you. This is the reason I chose this song; This is Judas' effort to express in musical monologue his concern over Jesus' rising popularity as a 'king' and the negative repercussions that will have. While Judas still loves Jesus, he believes that Jesus is just a man, not God. I believe Judas' message can translate to the way people think of Christmas these days, but where Judas is concerned with God being replaced by Jesus, I am concerned with Jesus being replaced by Christmas Presents."
There is really nothing left to say, is there? Oh, you can buy this track here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/gift-wrapped-vol-ii-snowed-in/id403730175 and catch the band touring with Anberlin and Circa Survive at Bogart's on Jan. 24.

Artist: The Long Gones
Album: Tear You Apart
Song: "Tear You Apart"
Daniele says: This is the band's first album in 12 years and it features some talented players known across the local music scene. The band is Bryan Dilsizian, Adam McAllister, Stace Keeney and Andy Jody with this album featuring Peter Greenburg. The album was recorded by Johnny Walker (Cut in the Hill Gang) and Craig Fox (The Greenhornes) and was mixed by Reuben Glaser (Pearlene) and the band. That's alotta names that have graced our scene for years now. The band is playing Northside Tavern on Friday, Dec. 3, with Barrence Whitfield. Check out the track below to hear some good old-fashioned bluesy-rock, the kind for which Northside is now known, but existed back in 1996 when The Long Gones played one of its first shows at Sudsy Malone's.
