Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) in "Thank You For Smoking"
“Young Adult” director Jason Reitman already demonstrated a willingness to mine laughs from a cheerfully amoral protagonist in this stinging satire dominated by tobacco lobbyist Nick Naylor. Nick realizes most people consider his job defending cigarette corporations’ freedom to slowly poison consumers roughly as respectable clubbing baby seals, but his own rationalized perspective is that he’s an honest capitalist with a gift for spin. His love for his young son (Cameron Bright) arguably humanizes him, and yet he’s more prone to lecturing the kid on harsh market realities than to playing catch.
