2. "Up in the Air"
Director: Jason Reitman; Cast: George Clooney, Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick
“Up in the Air” is what some people like to call a screenplay driven movie because it believes in the value of a good story, sharply drawn characters, narrative surprises and dialogue so good you want to quote it. Obviously we need more screenplay driven movies. Especially if they have performances as good as we get from this film’s rock solid ensemble—Clooney’s never been better, Farmiga should already be a star—and direction as nimble and pleasurable as Reitman’s. This kind of mature intelligent movie always looks so effortless and easy, but always feels so rare.
