Matt Damon as Tom Ripley in “The Talented Mr. Ripley”
With his chalky skin, thick-framed glasses, and bumbling manner, Ripley seems conspicuously out of place on an Italian beach. The tan, fit, handsome Dickie (Jude Law) is his total opposite. Hoping to assume that kind of confidence, Ripley brutally kills the golden boy, and proceeds to meticulously steal his identity. While the film initially suggests that the best way for a nerd or outcast to become a social magnet is to become someone else entirely, it ends up depicting Ripley as a lost soul caught in an identity purgatory of his own making.
