'The Messenger' nominated for Original Screenplay
A small downbeat movie about two soldiers tasked with informing the families of those who lost their lives in action, “The Messenger” has struggled to find an audience despite critical support. It’s a tough sell. But the Academy was able to recognize it with an expected nomination for Woody Harrelson's excellent supporting performance and a more surprising nod in the screenplay category (over lighter contenders like “(500) Days of Summer,” “The Hangover” and “It’s Complicated” and Best Picture nominee “Avatar”).
Some were predicting the powerful movie would find its way into the Best Picture or Best Supporting Actress (thanks to Samantha Morton) categories too, but how many Oscar voters had the nerve to watch it?
