Matt's worst movies of 2008

Oh the humanity, or lack thereof!

Movies can be sad, upsetting, depressing and all other sorts of unpleasant. They should not, however, be excruciating to watch for no reason. It’s a sensation that’s the result of everything from senseless gratuitious violence to, hypothetically, Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symoné visiting colleges. Get ready: These 10 flicks were 2008’s lowest of the low (with #1 being the worst).

1. "Disaster Movie"

1. "Disaster Movie"

Somehow Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer ("Meet the Spartans") hit new depths without drilling themselves into the center of the earth. Forget being embarrassed on behalf of Americans. This is the kind of movie that makes you ashamed to be a human.

2. "The Hottie and the Nottie"

2. "The Hottie and the Nottie"

Paris Hilton stars as a hot, dumb blonde. OK, makes sense so far. But this laugh-free comedy is made without an ounce of confidence or competence—plus the unintentional and dangerous message that all that really matters is how you look.

3. "Death Race"

3. "Death Race"

Kill those cops! Kill those prisoners! Kill kill kill! Sheesh.

4. "Saw V"

4. "Saw V"

Pointless and senseless don't begin to describe this pathetic sequel. Seriously. Make it stop.

5. "Seven Pounds"

5. "Seven Pounds"

An astonishingly manipulative movie that seems a little bit ashamed about its own premise. With good reason.

6. "88 Minutes"

6. "88 Minutes"

An excuse to torture women onscreen and torture the audience watching performances that would get laughed out of community theater. This is the stupider of Al Pacino's two terrible, idiotic movies this year. ("Righteous Kill" earns its honorable mention below.)

7. "First Sunday"

7. "First Sunday"

The comedy: Fat people should be mocked and white people are square. The lesson: Churches are the best places to rob. The punchline: the appearance of VH1 staple Tiffany "New York" Pollard.

8. "Postal"

8. "Postal"

Again refusing to contribute anything of value to society, writer-director Uwe Boll’s ("Alone in the Dark") latest offends absolutely everyone, from 9/11 victims to the poor to, yes, monkeys. The year's biggest, most jaw-dropping mess.

9. "In the Name of the King: Dungeon Siege"

9. "In the Name of the King: Dungeon Siege"

Hey, whaddaya know? Boll pulls a two-fer with a horribly made action flick thatby ignorance rather than intentspits in the face of the most basic moviemaking principles. Wouldn't be a huge deal if it were at least accidentally funny, but not even King Burt Reynolds can pull this out of dullsville.

10. "College Road Trip"

10. "College Road Trip"

A G-rated Disney comedy about the pressures facing teenagers as they move away from their parents and closer to the real world. Starring Martin Lawrence and Raven-Symoné. Why make a movie about college geared at 6-year-olds?

Dishonorable mentions:

11. "Star Wars: The Clone Wars"
12. "Rambo"
13. "10,000 B.C."
14. "Deal"
15. "The Foot Fist Way"
16. "Sex Drive"
17. "The Promotion"
18. "The Love Guru"
19. "Righteous Kill"
20. "One Missed Call"

Wow ... I couldn't disagree more about Seven Pounds. It's probably the third best film I've seen this year behind "The Dark Knight" and "The Wrestler"
