A powerful documentary account of the efforts of Liberian women to restore peace to their war-torn country. Bridging religious gaps and using non-violent methods, the women succeed in bringing about change and a democratically elected government.

The verdict: Director Gini Reticker allows the women to tell their story in their own words, and utilizes rare archival footage to illustrate, and commemorate, the noble efforts. If it sounds like “eat your vegetables” documentary filmmaking, well, it kind of is. But unlike many stories that underline the bleakness and desperation in volatile African countries, “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” offers an inspiring portrait of conscientious citizens working to make a change. Yes they can, indeed.
