'Perfect Sense' review

["Perfect Sense" premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The following is an excerpt from Metromix's coverage of the festival.]

A romance about the end of the world as we know it, "Perfect Sense" reunites Ewan McGregor with director David Mackenzie seven years after their cult favorite collaboration "Young Adam." That dramatic thriller featured a memorably kinky sex scene involving McGregor, Emily Mortimer and various food items. "Sense" also features sex and notably bizarre use of food, but it's not nearly as successful overall. Mostly, it's just weird.

Eva Green ("Casino Royale") stars as a scientist baffled by waves of people losing their senses all over the world. McGregor is the playboy chef she falls in love with. As senses depart one by one—beginning with smell—strange behavior (crying, shouting, devouring anything in sight) soon gives way to coping strategies and then full on adaptation.

Mackenzie and screenwriter Kim Fupz Aakeson suggest people have the ability to adjust to anything they need to. Today's unthinkable becomes tomorrow's normal. It's an optimistic and winningly romantic point of view, but, despite solid chemistry between Green and McGregor and a memorable climax that makes good on the title, "Perfect Sense" is ultimately too silly to truly captivate.
