Robert Downey Jr., “Iron Man”
Robert Downey Jr. has always been considered one of the top talents of his generation, but persistent drug use and legal woes made him a risky bet. He was dismissed from a regular role on “Ally McBeal” after run-ins with the cops. Woody Allen wanted to cast him in a film, but couldn’t secure the needed insurance. Then, last year, Downey was hailed by critics for his supporting role in David Fincher’s crime mystery “Zodiac.” But it was really the role of smarmy businessman-turned-superhero Tony Stark in “Iron Man” that put Downey squarely on Hollywood’s A-list. His Golden Globe nominated supporting turn in “Tropic Thunder” sealed the deal.
