New DVDs: Buy, rent or ignore?
"Paranormal Activity" "Jennifer's Body" "District 9" "(500) Days of Summer" "The Hangover"

You loved the movie, what about the DVD?

Find out as we examine the extras on this week's best movie DVDs...

"PARANORMAL ACTIVITY"

Stars: Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat
Director: Oren Peli
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "Worth seeing once (preferably with a large audience, preferably after dark), but then what? The success of the film's suspense makes it the ultimate in disposable entertainment."

Extras: DVD: Both the theatrical version of the movie and an unrated cut with an alternate ending.
Blu-ray: Both versions of the movie plus a digital copy of the theatrical version.

Worth watching: The unrated version, since if you're buying this movie on DVD or Blu-ray, you've probably already seen the theatrical version.
Worth skipping: The digital copy, since this is a movie you need to see at home, with the lights out, on a good TV with an equally impressive sound system, not on your iPod as you take the bus to work.
Worth adding: A making-of featurette that includes an interview with Steven Spielberg in which he explains why he suggested a different ending to the film.

Buy, rent or ignore: Ignore (until the inevitable "special edition" with appropriate extras).

"JENNIFER'S BODY"
Stars: Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Adam Brody
Director: Karyn Kusama (“Girlfight”)
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "Jennifer's Body plays it safe and familiar. Juno would not be pleased."

Extras: DVD: Both the theatrical and an unrated version of the movie; commentary by Kusama and writer Diablo Cody on the theatrical version; a second commentary on the unrated version by Kusama.
Blu-ray: All DVD extras plus deleted scenes; gag reel; “'Jennifer's Body': The Dead Pool” and “Megan Fox is HOT” featurettes; Video Diaries with Megan Fox, Johnny Simmons, Amanda Seyfriend, Diablo Cody and Dan Dubiecki; “Megan Fox Peer Pressure PSA”; “Fox Movie Channel Presents 'Life After Film School' with Writer Diablo Cody.”

Worth watching: Even if you're suffering from Megan Fox burnout—in which case you probably won't watch this film or its extras—the self-depricating tone of the funny PSA might remind you when you used to enjoy checking out meganfoxisatotalbabe.org.
Worth skipping: Without the always amusing Cody, the second commentary isn't as interesting as the first.
Worth adding: Megan Fox's home phone number, cell phone number, fax number, email address, Xbox Live gamertag, shoe size…

Buy, rent or ignore: Rent.

Other DVDs out this week:
— See the best post-apocalyptic sci-fi animated film released this year: “9” (also on Blu-ray)
— Mila Jovovich and Steve Zahn take the worst vacation ever in the ironically titled  “A Perfect Getaway” (also on Blu-ray)
— Low budget romantic comedy isn't much better than the big budget stuff in “Weather Girl”
— Not even an endorsement from Stephen King and the newfound fame of "Star Trek" star Chris Pine could get a decent theatrical release for "Carriers"

Also on Blu-ray:
“Home Front”

Also released:

“The Marine 2” (also on Blu-ray)
