One of the time-honored traditions of Riverfest is the release of some 100,000 bright yellow rubber ducks into the Ohio River. Don't ask, just come out and watch. During the Rubber Duck Regatta, duckies are dropped from the Purple People Bridge and race a quarter-mile down the river.
The person who bought the winning duck takes home a 2012 Honda Civic Sedan LX and potentially a million dollars.
New to this year's event: the owner of the second-place duck wins $100 a week in groceries from Kroger for one year. Third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh place finishing ducks get their owners $500 in cash from KEMBA Credit Union.
The Freestore Foodbank fundraiser - the organization's largest - raised $550,000 last year.
When: 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4
Where: Purple People Bridge, Pete Rose Way, Downtown
Cost: Free to watch, $5 a duck (or $25 for 6; $50 for 12; $100 for 24). Buy them in advance at Kroger stores, by calling 513-929-3825 or at www.fsfbmedia.org/rubberduckregatta.
