I found myself in the Montgomery area one evening, and my friend and I wanted a glass of wine but couldn’t decide where to go. Someone mentioned Thirsty Thursday at A Bottle or Two Wine Shop and the plan was set. It was like they knew we were coming!
The mood: A Bottle or Two is a retail wine shop with a tasting area with weekly happy hour and specialty tastings for beer and wine. Some are super relaxed and some are formal and educational. You can even book private events.
The shop is spacious and welcoming – not overwhelming at all. I really liked how the shop was formatted by price range and not region. That way you could limit your search based on your budget. When my friend and I walked in, we were greeted by the staff and given the low-down on how Thirsty Thursday works.
The drinks: Thirsty Thursday consists of five wine tastings for $5. You can’t beat that. The week I was there had selections from Tramonte & Sons Wine Distributor. Three of the wines were from California; one from Washington; and one from Spain. We chatted with the wine representative for a minute about our first pour, a Fume Blanc from Washington. It was light but full flavored; there was no real acid on the finish, which was perfect. It is easy to drink and would complement many different entrees.
By the second glass, Enotria Arneis from California, we decided we needed food to accompany the wine. We asked about ordering a cheese plate and discovered that Thirsty Thursday also includes free cheese. Score! As we munched away, we made notes of the different wines and which was purchase-worthy.
By the time we moved on to the red wine selections, we had become great friends with the wine rep. He filled us in on some of his other wines in the shop. We then mulled around commenting on the wines we have tried and liked.
By the end, the vote was unanimous; the Enotria Arneis from California was our favorite. The Arneis is a unique grape now growing in California after almost disappearing from Italy. There were almonds on the nose and green apple and pear on the finish. It was balanced and held up well to the sharp and mild cheeses we had in hand. It is a great sipping wine for a chill evening with friends.
The verdict: If you are in the mood for wine and a little education at the same time, A Bottle or Two offers no-pressure, no-judgment wine tastings almost every night. The formal wine tasting is on Friday. This summer they are offering Sangria Saturdays, and the beer tastings seem to be a monthly thing. The Sangria Saturdays are calling my name!
