I've eaten in Chalk's dining area a few times and always found the space contemporary, intimate and quirky. This time, however, I stayed in the tight but cozy bar area at the front of the restaurant. The bar itself can seat a few people, and there are also small tables.

The Experience

The bar was fairly full when my boyfriend and I arrived. The dark wood and greenish-yellow walls went well with the contemporary vibe set by the somewhat indie-techno music playing and the art and lighting fixtures.

I found the atmosphere a great reprieve from the chilly weather outside. Our server was pleasant and eager with suggestions on the food and wine. Since the restaurant focuses on wine (who would've guessed?), I ordered a glass of Yerring Station Shiraz Viognier ($12) and my boyfriend had a glass of the Olssens Riesling ($7), which the server warned was a bit drier than most Rieslings.

Chalk constantly changes things up, and as the menu changes so do the drink choices to complement the meals. So each time you visit, whether for drinks or food, you'll have a new experience. Manager Bryant Phillips says the restaurant tries to bring in unique wines and choices that will pair well with the chef's creations.

In addition to our drinks, my boyfriend and I ordered the seasonal pumpkin dip served with toasted pumpernickel bread ($9). We also had the grilled cheese ($7) and a burger ($9).

While the Chalk bar has a couple of smaller flat-screen TVs, it was nice to enjoy drinks without the blare of sports in the background.

Did it raise the bar?

If you're looking for a classy and cozy night out, Chalk is a good place to go. Whether you want romance or just a relaxing drink with the girls, this Covington spot serves up a good time and some good wine.
