I pulled into the large parking lot, saw the motorcycles and got a little nervous. Sports Depot looked so suburban and so new on the outside; was it really a biker bar?
Nah, Sports Depot is totally a suburban, clean, new bar for sports-loving West Siders. We went on a Wednesday night and there was a nice mixed crowd: some had just come in from the driving range, from work or off their bikes. It was very casual, with everyone pretty lively and happy to be halfway done with the work week.
The front outdoor patio looked like the place to be but was packed, so we found a table inside. We were greeted right away and informed that it was ladies' night with $3 margaritas and $3 martinis. It wasn't the biggest margarita I'd ever had, but it was strong and hey, it was only $3. I could definitely see myself throwing back a couple more on a warm summer night. My date decided on an Amber Bock ($2.50) on draft.
Most everyone was eating a late dinner, even those seated at the bar. Sports Depot's menu includes pub appetizers, wraps and burgers, or you can order Marco's pizza and subs, a restaurant located right next door. I was tempted by the Chunky White Chicken Chili but instead went with a stuffed jalapeno cheese pretzel ($5.49) to start. Our pretzel looked like it had sizzled on the fryer a bit longer than usual but was still fine and gooey on the inside. For dinner, I picked the cheeseburger with chips ($7.49) and my date decided on the Southwestern chicken wrap ($7.99).
My cheeseburger was big, juicy and came with an ample amount of chips, although I prefer fries. My date enjoyed his wrap, with sweet barbecue chicken and bits of bacon.
As part of ladies' night we also got to listen to a stellar acoustic duo playing some popular and classic rock 'n' roll. We had plenty of flat-screens from our viewing point with basketball or baseball on, but I thought it was cool to check out some women's bowling action while digging into my cheeseburger.
Sports Depot offers some sweet daily specials, including $1.25 domestic drafts on Mondays, $2.50 Miller Light and Bud Light 16-oz. plastics on Tuesday and Saturday, and $2.50 20-oz. drafts on Thursday. Happy hour runs 4-7 p.m. Monday-Friday.
